Nuclear Waste Continues to Pile Up

Nuclear energy has met the demands of the nation's energy needs for more than 30 years. Expansion of this energy source is imminent because of it's dependability and low threat to the environment. 104 nuclear plants are meeting 20% of the nation's energy demands. Commercial nuclear plants are generating about 15% of the world's electrical requirements. The benefits of nuclear power generation are well-known. No Greenhouse Gases are produced and released into the atmosphere. There is some contention over the subject of radioactive waste, it's removal and storage, depending on who you talk to it is a huge problem or a minor problem that is well regulated and under control,. Nuclear waste is extremely dangerous and it is piling up. It needs to be monitored for hundreds of thousands of years in a highly secure place. It is obviously a legacy that will be left to future generations.
Dominion, headquartered in Richmond Virginia, is one of the nation's largest producer of energy, generating 2.7 trillion BTU (British Thermal Units) of energy per day.

New federal regulations that Dominion has been working through will lead to an increase in nuclear units in this country.

In the year 2000, Dominion's nuclear power stations set a company record when it produced more than 28.3 megawatt hours for that year.

Thomas F. Farrell II, chief executive officer of Dominion Energy, said that these power stations record performance is due to their focus on reliable, safe operation and a team of highly trained, dedicated employees.

The Louisa County plant has two reactors with a generating power of 925 megawats net for unit one and 917 for unit 2. The Surry power station has two reactors with unit one capability of 810 megawatts and unit two 815 megawatts net. Refueling outages in the year 2000 didn't prevent three of the units from producing 19000 mwh more electricity than was generated in 1999.

The northeast quadrant of the United States' integrated utilities depends on Dominion to generate the largest BTU energy of them all. The company has a generating record of 19,000 megawatts, which will grow to more than 28,000 if it meets current expectations. Dominion also has natural gas pipeline more than 7,500 miles long with a delivery capability of 6.3 billion cubic feet per day. The company also stores natural gas at over 950 billion cubic feet of storage capacity. Dominion also has more than 35,000 miles of fiber-optic network that it is expanding to more than 700,000 miles.

Insight into Dominion Resources, Inc. can be obtained through Dominion Resources, Inc. Nuclear Operational Analysis Summary. It is a source of data and analysis that provides information related to operations of the company. The report discloses detailed information regarding more than 100 key parameters for each nuclear reactor. The report addresses business structure, operations and history of the company, its products and key revenue lines. It examines the companies strengths and weaknesses of its strategies for value chain positioning.
